Accelerator Spotlight: Start MMT

This summer, more than 50 startup founders and students are growing their companies in Memphis through a joint partnership of business accelerators. Each week until Memphis Demo Day on August 11, we’ll introduce you to these companies and the innovative products and technologies they’re launching right here in Memphis!

This week we’re highlighting Start MMT, one of the world’s first music industry innovation accelerators. Founded under the leadership of Hall of Fame Songwriter and Producer David Porter, Start MMT seeks to transform the music business by building innovative new music technology companies. There are two companies in this year’s inaugural Start MMT cohort:

  • EPKpage – A web-based platform that makes it easy for musicians to create professional electronic press kits and for venues to effectively vet musicians and their credentials.
  • Soundways – A technology platform that produces plug-ins and other software solutions in the audio engineering space.
Start MMT is jointly operated by Start Co., a nationally recognized venture development organization that builds founders and companies while promoting entrepreneurship in Memphis to advance the city’s economic growth, and The Consortium MMT, whose mission is to develop a viable music industry in Memphis for the future. Both organizations are 501(c)(3) non-profits. In addition to Start MMT, The Consortium MMT operates four other initiatives: the Music Mentorship Program, the Talent Development Complex, the bi-annual Epitome of Soul Awards benefit concert and the Emerging Stars Network, which work together to advance music technology, creative talent and music entrepreneurs. Start Co. fully operates three other accelerators, Sky High, Seed Hatchery and Upstart (all were featured earlier in the summer), and has helped its startups secure more than $14.8 million in cash investment since its founding.

How can you help these businesses grow in Memphis this summer? Attend an event, be a mentor or advisor, provide resources, become a customer, make a connection, or invest in a company! Let them know at!
