Greater Memphis Chamber Launches Workshop On Hiring Veterans
Release date: 5/7/2014
Memphis, Tenn. — The Greater Memphis Chamber is launching a Workforce Leadership Series with the workshop “From the Front Line to the Front Office: Leveraging Veteran Hires to Grow Your Business” on Wednesday, May 21 from 8 a.m. to noon. The Hiring Our Heroes job fair will take place the following day and is in partnership with the US Chamber.
The workshop will be led by Cliff Yager, the founder and managing partner of The Straight Skinny, a veteran to veteran organization dedicated to enriching the lives of military veterans by enhancing and supporting their careers.
“Our men and women in the military offer an amazing skillset to our society,” Yager said. “They are seeking help on topics like skills translation on resumes, negative stereotypes and building a skillset.”
Attendees will come away with a keen understanding of the veteran culture and how to integrate service members into their companies. The workshop will highlight ways veteran candidates can impact leadership, accountability and revenue in each organization as well as Work Opportunity Tax Credits and incentives for hiring veterans.
“Memphis businesses interested in recruiting and hiring our highly qualified veterans should attend this event,” said Dexter Muller, Senior Vice President of Community Development at the Greater Memphis Chamber. “Veterans combine qualifications with workplace disciplines that can help grow your business. Learn how to help our nation’s heroes transition smoothly from the front line to the front office.”
Almost 40 employers participated in last year’s job fair and about 50 veterans came away with job offers. Stories like Teresa Young, who formerly served as an automated logistics specialist in the Army, make this event worthwhile. After several months without a job, Young was hired by UPS as a Pre-Load Operations Supervisor following last year’s Memphis job fair.
Those interested in attending the workshop can register at www.memphischamber.com or call 901-543-3500. Any employers or veterans wishing to participate in the 2014 Hiring Our Heroes Job Fair can register at email@example.com or call 202-463-5807.
