Identifying Your Company's Culture


One of the most popular business buzzwords of the last few years seems to be “culture.” As the economy moves past the Great Recession and jobseekers have more options, especially in an “employees’ market” like Memphis, they want more than a job, they want a workplace environment they’ll enjoy. But how can companies build a great culture? Consider the following.
 
1. Time efficiency/flexibility
 
How do employees spend their time? Do they need to be in the office or is telecommuting an attractive and feasible option? Will flexible hours disrupt the workflow, or could employees take advantage of such a structure? Evaluate your business needs, then offer what makes sense and what works for your employees.
 
2. Workload
 
If employees are stretched to their limits, it leaves little time for them to take advantage of unique perks like professional development or unlimited vacation time. If those things are offered but are unrealistic, given an employee’s workload, it could actually backfire in terms of your culture and your company’s reputation as a great place to work.
 
3. Structure
 
Do your employees work on teams or individually? Is your organization largely vertical, or are there multiple employees at the same level? What’s the physical layout of the office? Do you have rows of cubicles or does everyone get an office? How your structure looks may also dictate your office layout and, thus, how your employees interact and build relationships.
 
4. People
 
Companies can try all they want to define a culture, but the reality is innate to the people who make up the organization. The culture of an organization where you can wear jeans to work will look completely different than one requiring a suit and tie, and it would be fruitless to try to force something that wasn’t a natural fit. That said, hiring strategically can help mold the culture you seek.
 
Professional recruiters can aid companies in identifying the culture job seekers want and finding candidates who are a fit for a specific organization’s culture.
 
Company culture is a relatively new consideration, but it’s important to understand your company’s culture and how to communicate it to prospective employees. Additionally, asking the right questions during the interview process can go a long way in making a home run hire that will ensure a winning company culture for years to come.
