Memphis HR Community: Get Ready for the Small Business Council's Annual HR Legal Summit!

The premier HR event for local small businesses arrives on Thursday, October 13th! The 2016 HR Legal Summit, as always, will be a feast of timely legal morsels designed to satisfy your craving for the latest developments in the rapidly evolving labor & employment world. Check out the topics and presenters below:

Employment discrimination and harassment actions — nationally respected employment attorney Maureen Holland will address hot areas in the field. You do not want to miss Maureen’s describing the hottest new EEO issues in the small employer’s workplace.

FMLA leaves of absence — possibly the messiest area of employment law, covered by top employment attorney Lisa Lichterman. Lisa will delve into this sometimes incomprehensible area of law and sort out the new issues.

FLSA collective actions — one of the scariest lawsuits an employer can find on its doorstep, brought down to earth by another excellent employment attorney, Lisa Krupicka.

Concerted activities under the Labor Act — a stupefying area of labor law being used by the Labor Board to assail employers (I’ll cover this topic). Get ready for some strange stuff!

Wait, there’s more: we have a blue-ribbon panel of top employment attorneys who will hold forth on other hot employment topics: the ADAAA (Imad Abdullah), trade secrets and non-competes (Rod Holmes), pregnancy discrimination (Latosha Dexter), religious discrimination (Frank Day), and EEOC Regional Director Kathy Kores returns to talk about the Commission’s gender parity initiative!

Respected HR consultants Judy Bell and Mike Stavropoulus will emcee the presentations, and HR Professionals publisher Cynthia Thompson will moderate the panel.

We’ll have some Chamber celebs with us as well, as well as a Chamber sergeant-at-arms in case the presenters get rowdy.

This event will be informative, useful in helping resolve your workplace issues, key to preventing work disputes from turning into lawsuit behemoths, and a good time for all! We promise you some handouts, brochures, and there may even be some “snappy repartee.”

When I was asked to take on the HR Legal Summit, one of Joyce Margulies’ marching orders for the past Summits became my mantra: No lectures! The hallmark of past Summits has been that the presentations, indeed, are interactive and participative—we want to continue this tradition, so bring along your opinions and comments!

We’re also excited about our location, the Memphis Botanic Gardens. After the Summit, you’re invited to have lunch (on your nickel) and tour the gardens.

This year’s HR Legal Summit will happen on Thursday, October 13, from 7:00 AM registration until 11:30 AM. Presentations will commence at 7:25 AM. You can register here. I hope to see you there!

Jeff Weintraub is the Regional Managing Partner for the Memphis Office of Fisher Phillips LLP. He also serves as the Chairman of the Greater Memphis Chamber's Small Business Council.
