Vice President of International Business Development

The Greater Memphis Chamber is seeking a Vice President International Business Development. This position coordinates and directs activities towards 1) growing the amount of Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) in Memphis/Shelby County; and 2) increasing the volume of local exports to foreign markets.  The VP will oversee the activities of the Director of the Memphis Metro Export Alliance to fulfill the Alliance’s objectives (attached).  The goal of the Metro Memphis Export Alliance is to increase exports from Memphis area businesses having the potential to sell products/services internationally.  The VP will also oversee the activities of the Chamber’s International Development Council, a group consisting of both an executive committee and general membership organizations, that work toward promoting a collaborative environment in international business development to increase overall foreign investment in the region.  This position is responsible for the effective functioning of this Council and assisting with other areas of the department as needed.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Acts as clearinghouse for information & resource identification; works with existing companies on on-going projects/needs, as well as newly relocated/expanded companies dealing with business environment challenges.  Works closely with organizations representing the international community.
  • Coordinates events and activities involving foreign delegations and trade missions visiting Memphis/Shelby County.  Coordinates projects geared toward raising the global visibility of the Memphis business community, such as presenting initiatives to community groups and professional associations; developing and distributing basic collateral materials, such as newsletters and quarterly magazine; attending pertinent trade shows; and executing overall marketing plan.
  • Responsible for managing Metro Memphis Export Alliance staff and oversight of State of Tennessee contract.
  • Serves as Chamber liaison on boards and with key partners such as Memphis in May International.
  • Acts in fundraising/sales capacity making personal calls on Council organizations soliciting Chamber membership renewals and/or new memberships.
  • Pursues individual company prospects, existing expansion prospects, formation of partnerships with other cities/countries, and other economic development functions.
  • Performs standard Chamber duties, including participation and attendance at staff meetings, required events, planning, budgeting, etc.  Also includes some accounting activities related to billing/collection.
  • Develops and executes strategies for FDI recruitment in key international markets and involvement with the annual Memphis in May honored country.
  • Answers specific questions about international business in Memphis from local and national media.
  • Fills in for staff at other events as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, economic development, public policy, or related field.
  • At least 7 years of economic development or international business development.
  • At least 5 years of management experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Basic understanding of the components of international business development, including academic and cultural environments, protocols, and state, local and national economic development organizations.
  • Ability to effectively interact with area organizations and represent the Chamber to the international community at large; ability to effectively and knowledgeably interact with external contacts such as executive level leadership in area business organizations on a frequent, daily basis.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Ability to make independent decisions related to project management.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and manage multiple priorities.

ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Work is conducted in office/conference room settings, event venues, foreign markets, and local partner’s facilities.
  • Position requires occasional domestic and international travels.
