Nominations are open for the Young Memphis Class of 2018! Tell us about a deserving young professional making an impact in our city.

Dane Smith
Corporate Treasurer, First Horizon

Dane Smith enjoys helping make dreams come true. As corporate treasurer at First Horizon National Corp., the 35-year-old manages interest, liquidity and capital risks and is part of a banking and investment machine that provides loans to build homes, start businesses and extend educations. Smith also likes being part of a corporation that extends its resources to nonprofits through the First Tennessee Foundation. “I want to make a difference, and I think I can do that here,” Smith said. “Our success is dependent on the community’s success.”

The Idaho native who double-degreed in finance and business management was introduced to Memphis through a job opportunity with First Tennessee, which is owned by First Horizon. He had his sights on bigger cities, but when he saw developments like construction of the FedEx Forum, he decided Memphis was the place to be. He became a fan of the city and of the Memphis Grizzlies. It’s been 13 years. He still lives downtown and goes to nearly all the games. “Being able to live, work and play in the same area was important to me,” he said.

A volunteer with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Smith also supports the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis. His personal time is spent playing soccer and operating his own property management company. His advice to other young professionals: “There’s always going to be things you don’t know, don’t understand. Raise your hand, do the work others won’t, and figure it out later.”
