Why Memphis? Why this location?
I am a native Memphian and have lived in Memphis except for the four years that I lived in the DC area. When I returned to Memphis in 2014, I wanted to build a spiritual community center in the heart of Memphis. Art•Body•Soul did not take form however until last Spring when I trained to be a Dalian Method Facilitator. I knew that I wanted to bring this powerful self-healing technique to Memphis and I began working on a business plan. Once I was in the creative process of planning, new ideas emerged. Combining art with the other spiritual and wellness practices was a natural for me because of my love of color and painting. I am excited about our central location near Poplar and I240. It makes in accessible to all Memphian’s to partake in our classes and services and to bring and share their own creative ideas in our space.
What does your business do or provide?
Art•Body•Soul is where painting, yoga, meditation and self-healing all meet. Our focus is on building spiritual community and offering opportunities for self-discovery, self-healing and transformation. We are a gallery for art in addition to being a studio. We plan to exhibit local, up and coming artists with openings on first Fridays as a part of our Friday Nights at the Gallery event series. Our first exhibit at the Grand Opening will be of my paintings. As a studio we offer classes in Painting Out Loud which is an intuitive painting method. In this class we are interested in the experience of painting versus the finished product. Other classes include yoga, self-healing techniques & active meditation. We will be offering a wide range of services including the Dalian Method, massage, aromatherapy and energy balancing and clearing. As we grow we’d like to incorporate other ideas from the community. We are open for corporate and group events in Painting Out Loud on Friday afternoons.
What makes your business stand out?
Our classes and services are intended to support Memphians who are seeking new outlets for health and wellbeing. We live in a fast-paced, complicated and changing world. Many people today are seeking both mindfulness practices for stress reduction and healthcare approaches outside of mainstream Western medicine to complement their conventional medical care. Our goal is to help people connect more fully with themselves so that they can live more authentically and peacefully in uncertain times.
Our concept of offering ongoing classes in traditional mindfulness practices, painting and self-healing techniques is unique to Memphis. We are also the only studio offering the Dalian Method, an advanced self-healing method. The Dalian Method (DM) is an alternative approach to health and wellness, designed to create an opportunity for healing the mind, body and spirit. Devised by mystic and bestselling author, Mada Dalian, the Dalian Method is a unique system that aids in the process of releasing energetic blocks and acts as a tool for self-discovery, spiritual awakening and empowered change. The Dalian Method is a bridge to the inner knower, bringing greater clarity and authenticity. What sets it apart from other self-healing techniques is the way that it was designed to bypass the mind to quickly access unconscious patterns, repressed emotions and false beliefs. This process is intended to allow the emergence of a different view, an “aha moment” that is often quite profound. When this occurs in a session, the new perception gives insight into your experiences and what they have been trying to teach you. The work is not about becoming something new and improved but rather about returning home to your true self.
What advice would you give to those wanting to start their own business?
Write a business plan. I know that sounds very practical. For me it was the creative process that occurred while working on the business plan that really brought all the pieces together and helped to make Art•Body•Soul a reality. I’d never worked on a business plan, so I used SBA’s Business Plan Tool with step-by-step guidance. It made the process so much easier and more thorough for me. With a plan established I was ready to take my ideas and turn them into a reality.
