There are several proposals in the public conversation to ensure that Memphis has a competitive business climate. Today, Senior Vice President of Economic Development makes the case for removing a simple barrier for companies to invest in this area – a barrier that independent third-party research suggests makes Memphis and Shelby County less competitive in attracting projects, as compared to peer markets.

Shelby County is Tennessee’s largest Advanced Energy employer, according to the 2018 Tennessee Advanced Energy Economic Impact Report released this week. Shelby County supplanted Davidson County as the state’s top market for jobs in this sector, which includes technology that makes energy cleaner, safer, more secure and more efficient, including electric and plug-in hybrid cars, high-performance buildings, and the latest wind, solar and nuclear technologies.
