The Memphis MSA is the 43rd largest metro in the U.S with a population over 1.3 million. Similar to growth patterns in the state of Tennessee and the nation, the Memphis metro area’s population grew by 3.8% from 2010 to 2018. Five-year projected population growth for the Memphis MSA is only slightly below the state and nation at 2.3% from 2018 to 2023. African-Americans comprise roughly 47% of the metro population, followed by White Americans (45%), Hispanics (5.6%), Asians (2.1%), American Indian (0.3%), and two or more races (1.8%). People ages 25 to 54 make up the largest age group in the Memphis metro area and comprise about 40% of the population; a slightly higher percentage compared to Tennessee and the nation. The Memphis area’s median age is 36.5, reflecting a slightly younger population compared to the state and the nation.
