Senior Vice President, Economic Development

The overall purpose of this job is to oversee the day-to-day functions of the economic development department for the Greater Memphis Chamber. This includes responsibility over all job retention and recruitment activities, project pipeline management, coordination of the community’s One-Stop-Shop team, data and research collection and dissemination, RFI fulfillment, International Business Development, and MWBE Business Development. This position serves as the primary contact with all federal, state and local economic development officials.

Essential Functions:

  • Serve as the primary function to attract new businesses to Memphis and leads the efforts to identify and help drive expansion efforts for existing businesses.
  • Manage the project flow and activities of the communities One-Stop-Shop team that includes the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development, Economic Development Growth Engine, the Tennessee Valley Authority, Memphis Light, Gas & Water, and the Workforce Investment Network.
  • Develop strategic planning, budgeting, and execution of the economic development, annual planning marketing and recruitment programs for the Chamber.
  • Manage staffing, strategic planning, budgeting, and program execution for the all Economic Development programs including foreign direct investment and export education promotion for the community. Chamber.
  • Manage the fulfillment of and maintain confidentiality for all request for proposals and request for information from site consultants, corporations and partner economic development agencies.
  • Conduct strategic planning as needed for various programs within the department including retention, recruitment, economic development service fulfillment, international development, etc.
  • Interface with public and private sector investors and elected officials on various issues affecting economic development in the region and provide periodic updates to these groups as requested.
  • Lead all larger, high visibility corporate expansions and relocation projects and coordinate the various partner economic development agencies as necessary.
  • Manage the creation and maintenance of corporate and consultant contact lists for use in retention, recruitment and international development initiatives.
  • Oversee the production and maintenance of statistical information and related collateral materials used in the overall marketing and recruitment activities for the community.
  • Interface with various local and national media organizations in the promotion of Memphis as a viable business destination.
  • Conduct fundraising activities for both the Chamber and its associated economic development programs.

Other Functions:

  • Serve on various statewide economic development boards and commissions.
  • Work with other Chamber affiliated councils on issues affecting economic development.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, or related area.
  • Certificate from Economic Development Institute.
  • Seven years experience managing a major economic development organization.

Knowledge, Skillls & Abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills; ability to interact effectively with external contacts such as political and corporate leaders.
  • Solid annual planning skills.
  • Computer literate, high level of accuracy, detail oriented.
  • Ability to influence and persuade to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, and negotiation skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of budgeting process.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and manage multiple priorities.
  • Problem-solving skills at both a strategic and functional level.
  • Technical skills in strategic planning and marketing, business and market development, market research and planning, and promotions/advertising.

Research Analyst

The Research Analyst serves as a primary resource for market research and analysis within the Greater Memphis Chamber. The purpose of this position is to gather, analyze, summarize and communicate business, demographic and economic information maintained by the Business Intelligence division for economic development purposes.

Primary Duties:

  • Assist with maintaining departmental data sheets for industries, economic data, demographics and other subjects.
  • Maintain all departmental lists including closings & downsizings, press releases, company data, internal contact lists and any other information as needed.
  • Effectively prioritize with the Project Research Manager to execute responses to economic development Requests for Information (RFI) and or Requests for Proposals (RFP) from site selection consultants, individual prospects/companies, Tennessee Economic and Community Development and Chamber staff, TVA, etc.
  • Generate new content used to support targeted industry-specific business development activities. Help to create and regularly update collateral highlighting the region’s strengths in the priority business sectors/clusters.
  • Communicate data through charts, graphs and trend analyses using various computer software tools.
  • Provide up-to-date data for use within all Chamber publications and webpages.
  • Maintain the inventory of base market research located on both the internal network and website.
  • Assist the Project Research Manager in the collection of the ACCRA Cost of Living Index.
  • In concert economic development team, develop expertise in showcasing the region’s competitive advantages in the key areas of workforce availability, operating costs, infrastructure and quality of place. Integrate that knowledge into the development of custom project proposals, presentations and other collateral.
  • Regularly manage and input data into the Tennessee Valley Authority’s sites and real estate database.
  • Other duties as assigned

Core Competencies and Special Skills or Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Economics, Business Analytics, or related fields with a strong interest in Marketing, Branding, and Communications.
  • 0-3 year of experience and/or prior experience in a market research role.
  • Strong familiarity with datasets from the United States Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Bureau of Economic Analysis, and other data sources used in community and economic research.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of data collection methods and techniques, as well as research project design including research methods and sources, especially for community economic- and workforce-related data
  • Multi-task oriented, with the ability to prioritize a heavy workload and meet multiple deadlines.
  • Outstanding analytical skills with a strong understanding of (and ability to apply) statistics.
  • Speed and accuracy in making numerical determinations and in performing online research.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of Word, Excel & PowerPoint in a Windows environment.
  • Ability to provide exceptional customer service to both internal and external stakeholders while maintaining a high level of professionalism.

Marketing & Communications Internship – Spring 2020

Qualifications:

  • Major in Marketing, Communications, Journalism or similar major
  • Undergraduate (Senior) or Graduate student level

Please include:

    graphic design

Position Summary:
Internship opportunity for a student to work closely with the Greater Memphis Chamber Marketing and
Brand Team to develop dynamic content to promote Memphis the Memphis business climate and the
Chamber. The Marketing & Communications Intern will work with the team to create engaging content that
supports the Chamber’s economic development and membership programs.

Responsibilities:

  • Write and edit blog posts and content for the Chamber website and Momentum Blog
  • Create and post approved social media content via HubSpot
  • Edit and proofread content for accuracy
  • Design social media graphics via Canva
  • Assist with producing weekly e-newsletters
  • Assist with content development for presentations
  • Assist with taking photos, shooting video and conducting interviews
  • Assist with miscellaneous tasks as assigned by team members

Requirements:

  • Excellent writing and editing skills, plus a keen attention to details
  • Versatility: ability to work within a small, high-powered team and switch gears from task to task as
    deadlines adjust
  • Ability to use good judgment and work ethic
  • Understanding of and experience using social media platforms
  • Experience with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Experience working with HubSpot and Canva
    preferred.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, deadline and priorities
  • Flexible and proactive in taking on assignments and responsibilities, and willingness to learn
