THE GREATER PLATE: The Beloved Barksdale’s

October 24, 2025 by Taylor Ann Carpenter

June 2024. A beloved Midtown diner caught fire. Patrons and community members were asking, “When will it reopen?” “Will it reopen?” “What will happen to the historic Barksdale’s restaurant?”

In comes Bryant Bain.

“That’s a fun story…” Bryant began. “Basically, right place, right time.”

What Will Happen to Beloved Barksdale’s?

Shortly after the fire, Bryant decided to drive past the building because he’s “nosy” and wanted to see the damage. It just so happened, at the same time he was driving by, out walked then owner, Beth Henry. Bryant rolled down the window of his car and asked what was going to happen to the restaurant. Beth explained she was hoping to reopen. Bryant gave Beth his business card in case anything changed.

Weeks passed, and no one heard anything about the restaurant until a post on a neighborhood group mentioned that it was going to be sold and likely turned into office spaces. Immediately, Bryant got on the phone and called Beth.

Next thing you know, Ryan Glosson, Bryant’s business partner, is meeting with Beth.

“Her biggest priority was this place staying the same as it was,” Ryan explained, “Being that community, staple location. That’s exactly what we wanted to do as well.”

Bryant, his wife Heather, and Ryan became the new owners of Barksdale’s and began the journey to reopen after the fire.

“Everything had to be gutted and redone,” Bryant said.

Even still, they met with the staff to get their thoughts and answer any questions or concerns.

“We met with the entire staff [and figured out] what was sacred in this room,” Ryan said.

What had to remain the same were the walls. Walls displaying memories throughout the decades. Sports team memorabilia, pictures of friends and former owner Bob Henry, and Memphis-theme décor line the notable wood panels.

Barksdale’s Reopens

April 14th Barksdale’s reopens. The moment the ribbon was cut, the crowd erupted into cheers. The cherished breakfast spot, open for business once again.

Despite the changes, the atmosphere remained the same.

“Homey,” as Heather put it.

Barksdale is a place for anyone and everyone to feel at home.

A plate of 2 Eggs Any Way or Southwestern Omelet are just a few of the delicious options at Barksdale’s.

“I think it really does try and be a diner. It really tries to be kind of that community place. You’ve got people who come in here almost every day and drink the coffee,” Ryan starts.

“Twice a day,” Heather chimes in.

Bryant adds, “I want people to feel like they’re at Grandma’s house. That’s essentially what I made the menu after.”

The Menu

The menu mostly remains the same with some minor switches here and there. You have their most popular dish, the two-egg plate. Or you can try their savory Western omelet. Or perhaps, you’re in the mood for something sweet. They’ve got pancakes and French toast. Maybe you’re more of a lunch person. Barksdale’s has a whole menu filled with classics, like Heather’s favorite, chicken and dressing.

Regardless of what you choose, you can’t go wrong.

“Just to have it back, to see these walls decorated the way they were, I think it’s been great for folks,” Ryan said.

Memphis is Greener Than The Headlines Suggest

October 22, 2025 by Taylor Ann Carpenter

When you think of colors associated with Memphis, you think blue, not green.  But Memphis is greener than you think. We have some incredible green spaces and initiatives that make us stand out.

We are home to a 4500-acre park, Shelby Farms, that’s over five times the size of Central Park in New York City. We are the soon-to-be home to an $80 million wastewater recycling facility, which will ensure our drinking water remains one of our greatest assets. This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Memphis being a green city.

Hear what Ted Townsend, President & CEO, has to say here and below:

Rankings measure what was, but we are focused on what’s next for Memphis. Let’s make the city greener and greater.

Memphis Business Gains National Recognition

September 30, 2025 by Taylor Ann Carpenter

When a locally-owned, small Memphis business is recognized by one of the largest media companies in the world…it matters.

Caissa Public Strategy, LLC dba Caissa K12, a strategic communications firm headquartered in Memphis, TN, was recently featured in a New York Times article.

Brian Stephens, founding partner and CEO at Caissa K12, said, “Memphis is home, but it’s also a proving ground. If solutions work here, they can work anywhere. The city has the talent, the need, and the community to support meaningful change.”

Which is exactly why they were recognized by a national publication.

Why It Matters

Being a small business and being featured in a national publication is huge news—not just for the small business, but for the city it resides in.

  1. It Shows Memphis is Full of Problem Solvers

“It shows Memphis isn’t just in the headlines for problems — we’re part of national solutions. The New York Times recognition highlights that innovation here has an impact far beyond our city,” Stephens noted.

  1. It Spotlights Innovation

“Our Memphis roots have shaped who we are and how we work. Yes, it’s a tremendous point of pride to be featured in the New York Times. More importantly, though, it’s validation of our city’s innovative approach to problem-solving and recognition that the solutions we are building here in Memphis and Shelby County are making a national impact,” Paige Walkup, President and founding partner at Caissa K12, and Co-Chair of the Chamber’s Women’s Business Council, said.

  1. It Attracts New Opportunities to Memphis

Stephens explained, “National coverage builds credibility. It signals to partners and investors that Memphis companies are doing work worth noticing and puts our city on the map as a place where real innovation happens.”

Additionally, the New York Times article was later discussed on an NPR podcast, Marketplace.

Caissa K12 makes Memphis GREATER.

FAQ: Why Should I Join the Chamber?

September 5, 2025 by Taylor Ann Carpenter

Perhaps you’re a small business just getting your start or maybe you’re a well-established business in our community. You think, “Should I join the Chamber?” or “Is this the right investment for my business?” Regardless of what stage your business is in, the Greater Memphis Chamber works to make sure you’re getting the most of your membership.

Advocacy

The Greater Memphis Chamber is dedicated to driving the Memphis business agenda which often appears in the form of advocacy and government relations. As a member, you will have the opportunity to help us advocate for business-friendly policies on local, state, and federal levels.

Each year, we take a delegation of business leaders to Nashville for MEM2NASH. This trip is a day full of meaningful meetings with state legislators and officials and is a time for business leaders to advocate alongside the Chamber for what really matters to businesses and Memphis.

Whitney Jo, a Chamber Ambassador and representative from Playhouse on the Square said, “Not only is it [Chamber membership] great for networking that can only grow our business, but also a way to be an even bigger asset to our community by participating in the bigger picture.”

Advocacy is one of the many ways our members participate in the “bigger picture.” It is how our business community can contribute to the broader Memphis community.

Business Resources and Support

Business resources and support are a crucial part of what we do at the Chamber. By joining the Chamber, you have access to a wide range of benefits. Chamber Benefits Inc. is a subsidiary of the Greater Memphis Chamber that offers these benefits. We offer a workers’ compensation insurance solution, AccidentFund. We have a partnership with ODP Solutions where our members and their employees can save on office products. We also offer Cigna Health insurance for our members. Through this partnership, we provide discounts on health insurance for member businesses and help them find the plan that fits their employees’ needs.  Additionally, we recently launched healthcare centers, called ChamberCare, in partnership with WeCare tlc and YMCA Memphis & Mid-South. These centers provide employees of Chamber members and their dependents with quality, convenient medical services from experienced professionals.

Aside from healthcare, insurance, and discounts, we have an in-house research team, Greater Memphis Economic Research Group (GMERG), that assists members with a variety of research projects. GMERG prides themselves on helping business leaders make data-driven decisions. Their research projects range from business cost comparisons to economic impact reports to spatial analysis reports and more.

Workforce

Workforce is another of our priorities at the Chamber. For a city to have economic growth, it has to have the workforce to support it. Our goal is to work alongside existing businesses and help them build a future-ready workforce.

We work directly with our members to provide them with the resources they need and help with a variety of workforce-related concerns. We can walk you through the process of leveraging hiring incentives, provide you with key workforce data, and even discuss opportunities with the untapped labor pool.

The Greater Memphis Chamber’s Workforce Development team has decades of experience that they use to create valuable programs and initiates to help further our talent pipeline. Businesses looking to get involved in developing our city’s workforce can participate in our Manufacturing Tours or Teacher Externship Program. Both of these programs expose educators to a variety of career opportunities they can then share with their students. We continually develop new programs and ideas to cultivate the workforce our businesses need.

Visibility and Business Promotion

Finally, if you join the Chamber there are opportunities to increase your business’s visibility and brand recognition. By being an engaged member, you can increase your visibility and promote your business. Simply attending events and networking can help in this aspect. We also have sponsorship opportunities that range from supporting our events, our magazine and more.

Brent Hooks, Vice President of Cornerstone Engineering said, “The Chamber has provided Cornerstone Engineering with a platform to showcase our capabilities while aligning us with key initiatives that impact Memphis… By participating in Chamber-led programs and initiatives, we’ve significantly elevated our visibility, demonstrating our commitment to strengthening Memphis and supporting its growth.”

Chamber Referral Month

September is Chamber Referral Month. All month long, you can submit a business contact to our form. Help us grow by referring a business to join the #1 Chamber in the Country. Every referral to the Greater Memphis Chamber you make gives you a entertainment packages, gift cards, and more. 901 Day: “We’re Working On It”—A Celebration of Memphis in Motion

August 31, 2025 by Taylor Ann Carpenter

By Choose901

Every city has its own rhythm, but Memphis? We’re a work in progress, and proud of it. This 901 Day,  Choose901 and VSNR are teaming up for Project 901: “We’re Working On It” a block party and cultural activation in the Edge District that puts our city’s layered identity front and center.

What does “We’re Working On It” mean?

It’s both a declaration and an invitation. We’re not here to gloss over boarded windows or skip past slow streets. We’re here to celebrate the people, places, and progress that make Memphis what it is and what it’s becoming. As the VSNR Program Director Stephen “Sola” Robertson puts it: “This campaign speaks directly to the layered identity of Memphis. We recognize the challenges the city faces from development gaps to generational inequities but this event uplifts the creative communities, businesses, and local changemakers who are actively building a more vibrant, connected Memphis.”

From gallery walls to food trucks, DJ sets to interactive writing walls, Project 901 is a love letter to our city’s grit and creativity. It’s about honoring the artists, entrepreneurs, and community leaders who show up every day to move Memphis forward.

Sola caught up with some of those builders like Bria Saulsberry, educator, poet, and founder of HomeGrown Arts, whose story reminds us: “Progress is both personal and collective. She’s living proof that the city’s next chapter is being written by those who invest in its roots.” And if you’re talking Memphis hustle, don’t miss the story of Cxffee Black, who are pouring culture, conversation, and community into every cup. “Building Memphis starts with pouring into our people,” they say.

As Project 901’s organizers put it: “We’re not just throwing a party, we’re making a statement. Memphis is a work in progress. And we’re celebrating the people who are building anyway.”

On September 1st, join us at The Ravine and throughout the Edge District for a free, city-wide celebration. Bring your people. Wear your city. Be part of the story. Because in Memphis, we’re working on it, together.

Greater Memphis Chamber Secures U.S. Chamber Foundation Grant to Transform Regional Workforce Development

August 11, 2025 by Taylor Ann Carpenter

The Greater Memphis Chamber has been awarded a significant grant from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, with support from The Coca-Cola Company, to establish a Talent Pipeline Management (TPM) Academy in Memphis. This strategic initiative will address critical workforce needs and create pathways to high-quality jobs throughout the Digital Delta.

Building Memphis’s Workforce Future

The TPM Academy represents a transformative approach to workforce development, providing specialized training for up to 30 participants from various sectors. While primarily targeting regional businesses, the program will also include workforce intermediaries, community colleges, and nonprofit organizations—creating a comprehensive ecosystem of workforce development partners.

“This grant represents a significant opportunity to strengthen Memphis’s workforce ecosystem,” said Ted Townsend, President and CEO of the Greater Memphis Chamber. “By implementing the TPM framework, we’re creating a sustainable model that aligns employer needs with education and training programs, ultimately helping to fill critical skills gaps in our region.”

The program’s structure combines flexible learning opportunities with hands-on implementation, featuring asynchronous learning components and two in-person workshops. This blended approach ensures participants can develop practical strategies tailored to Memphis’s unique workforce landscape.

Launching with Momentum

The Chamber is already building momentum for this initiative, hosting a Champions Workshop on August 7, 2025. This half-day event brought together HR professionals, community-based organizations, and workforce practitioners to explore the TPM framework and discuss recruitment strategies for the full academy.

Under the leadership of  Sondra Howell, Senior Vice President of Workforce Development at the Greater Memphis Chamber, the TPM Academy aims to achieve ambitious goals:

  • Engaging 37 advanced industry companies in employer-led workforce strategies
  • Creating 10,350 high-quality jobs in the Memphis region
  • Ensuring at least 50% of job holders come from opportunity populations who traditionally face barriers to employment and career advancement

“The TPM Academy will equip participants with the tools, knowledge, and support needed to build employer-led partnerships that can address our region’s most pressing workforce challenges,” said Howell. “We are grateful for the investment in Memphis and are excited to collaborate with the U.S. Chamber Foundation and Coca-Cola on this important work.”

Why This Matters for Memphis

This initiative aligns perfectly with the Chamber’s ongoing efforts to position Memphis as a premier destination for business growth and talent development. As the Digital Delta continues to attract significant investments, having a workforce ready to meet these emerging opportunities becomes increasingly critical.

The TPM Academy represents another strategic tool in the Chamber’s comprehensive approach to economic development, complementing other initiatives like the Regional Site Search Tool, ChamberCare health centers, and military veteran recruitment programs—all designed to make Memphis more competitive in attracting and retaining both businesses and talent.

Organizations interested in participating in this transformative program should contact Sondra Howell at the Greater Memphis Chamber for more information on how to get involved.

Elevated Living Comes to Cordova: Springs at Colonial Grand Opening

August 4, 2025 by Taylor Ann Carpenter

By: Anastasia Sanchez

Cordova, TN just welcomed its newest residential community with the grand opening of Springs at Colonial, a thought-out living space that sets a new standard for apartment living in the Memphis area. With refined, town-home style entries, pet-friendly amenities, and a community-focused atmosphere, Springs at Colonial is already standing out as the place to be.

Thoughtfully Designed

Springs at Colonial offers a variety of layouts to fit every lifestyle, ranging from charming studios to spacious three-bedroom homes.

Andrew Harris, a representative from the Springs at Colonial team, highlights what sets the community apart in terms of design, “Our apartments offer private, ground-level access—so if you’re on the second floor, you reach your home via a dedicated staircase, not shared hallways. Some units even include attached garages, and residents can conveniently park right outside their doors. It is all about making everyday living easier and more comfortable.”

Pet-Friendly

One of Springs at Colonial’s standout features is their genuine commitment to pet owners. They recognize the significant role pets play in their residents’ lives and have thoughtfully designed the community to support that bond. With two on-site parks, a fully equipped pet spa, and even treats stocked in both the leasing office and maintenance carts, it is clear that pets are just as valued as their owners.

Harris explained, “We go above and beyond- whether that means walking your dog if you are running late or feeding your cat while you are out of town. We are here to take care of your pets when needed.”

Amenities

Just when things couldn’t get any better, Springs at Colonial’s amenities take every day living to the next level. Residents have access to features that make home life feel convenient and comfortable.

The community includes a car wash bay with vacuums and power sprayers, valet trash service, a 24-hour fitness center, and a resort-style pool that stays heated most of the year. Whether you are cleaning your car, breaking a sweat, or even soaking up the sun, Springs at Colonial has everything you need right on site.

The amenities don’t stop there! Residents also have access to a welcoming clubhouse open 7 days a week, featuring co-working spaces, a conference room, and outdoor lounge areas with cozy fire pits.

Overall Vibe

The vibe at Springs at Colonial can best be described as elevated. This description resonates throughout the community’s design, amenities, and atmosphere. This elevated experience provides residents with a welcoming, modern neighborhood where you can truly feel at home.

As Harris said, “This is definitely the new neighborhood to be in. We offer more than just a place to live; it presents an opportunity to be a part of Cordova’s exciting future.”

Vision for Cordova’s Future

Springs at Colonial isn’t just about providing excellent living spaces; it’s about contributing to the growth of Cordova.

“We want Springs at Colonial to bring Cordova the lift it needs to really become the next, most desired area in Memphis,” Harris shared.

With the top tier amenities and community focused spirit, Springs at Colonial is helping shape a brighter future for Cordova and its residents.

What It Takes to Be Chamber of the Year

July 29, 2025 by Taylor Ann Carpenter

Winning Chamber of the Year is a highly sought-after designation amongst chambers of commerce across the country. Many dream of it but never get there. It’s one thing to apply, but another to actually win. And yet, here we are, the Greater Memphis Chamber in possession of the highest accolade one can receive in the industry. This award is a recognition of our chamber’s excellence in operations, member services, and community leadership.

It all began when our President & CEO, Ted Townsend, told the team he wanted us to apply for the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives’ (ACCE) Chamber of the Year award.

The last time Memphis applied for the award was roughly 20 years ago, and then, we didn’t even make it past the first round. Since then, we’ve attempted to apply every so often—starting the application, but realizing it’s too involved of a process, we didn’t have the necessary information, or simply being too busy with other Chamber projects to complete the application. But now was the time. We had the people, we had the programs, and we had the support of our investors.

Thus, started a months-long journey to Chamber of the Year.

Becoming Chamber of the YearGreater Memphis Chamber team surround Chamber of the Year award in Philadelphia

What does it take to be Chamber of the Year? The application is extensive. Tax documents, membership strategies, marketing plans, supporting materials, thousands and thousands of words, and pages upon pages all make up the application. Not to mention, to even be allowed to apply, we had to qualify in at least 3 of 5 ACCE’s key performance areas in operations.

And that’s just the beginning.

Only three applicants in each category are selected to be a finalist, but there are over 1,700 chambers in the country. That means narrowing down the selection to only 12 finalists is an intense process. Now, not every chamber applies, but dozens upon dozens of chambers apply across all four categories.

The fact of the matter remains: this was not an easy win.

On June 5th, ACCE announced the finalists, and our name was one of the few. Hoots and hollers erupted down the halls of our office. Being a finalist is an accomplishment in and of itself.

Now, we enter the next stage—the interview.

The Interview

President & CEO Ted Townsend and Chief Government Affairs Officer Bobby White pose with the Chamber of the Year award upon winningOnce it was announced, we selected our interviewees, Ted Townsend and Chief Government Affairs Officer, Bobby White, knowing they would represent our chamber well and be able to talk about all aspects of it, from the day-to-day operations to specific projects. Our team got together for weekly meetings (sometimes even multiple in the week) over the next 6 weeks. We reviewed the application, going over each portion regardless of how big or small it might be.

Finally, we held a mock interview. We called on two partners, Ernest Strickland, President and CEO of the Black Chamber of Memphis, and former County Commissioner Mike Carpenter, founder of Carpenter Civic Strategies. These two have knowledge and expertise in the work we do, and we knew they wouldn’t shy away from asking tough questions. It was this mock interview paired with our weekly sessions that really helped us win the award.

Fast forward to Tuesday, July 22. Ted and Bobby walked into the conference room at the Philadelphia Convention Center with their game faces on, ready to complete the interview.

Everything up to this point was arguably the easiest part. The hardest part was in the waiting. We waited until 7 p.m. the next day to know where we stood.

Winning the Championship

ACCE hosted their annual awards recognizing members with outstanding communications, lifetime achievement awards, and more. The very last award was Chamber of the Year—specifically category 4, which was our category.

“Chamber of the Year…” “Category 4…” “Greater Memphis Chamber.”

We jump out of our seats with laughter, excitement, and astonishment. We did it. We are the Chamber of the Year. Best in the country.

The Impact of Chamber of the Year

But what does this mean for the rest of Memphis?

Our President & CEO likes to say, “We are creating a culture of winning.” And he doesn’t just mean within the Chamber. He means within our city, our region. Not only is this win a recognition for the work we do internally, but it is a recognition for our city’s ability to take on new challenges, persevere, and adapt to change. It’s a testament to the desire that runs deep in this city to do more for our community. It is a signal to other communities, other businesses, and even other individuals outside the area that Memphis has something special. If you aren’t here, you are missing out. It is the beacon for the vibrant future we have ahead of us.

Driven by Values: CanopyNation’s Ongoing Commitment to Memphis

July 18, 2025 by Taylor Ann Carpenter

By: Anastasia Sanchez

CanopyNation, a Memphis-based employee benefits and insurance agency, recently celebrated the grand opening of its new office, marking an exciting step forward that highlights the company’s continued growth in the city they call home. Sheridan Hibbard, Vice President of Sales, Marketing, and Employee Wellbeing, points out that growing in Memphis happened organically.

“Many of our clients are based in Memphis, and we prioritize doing business with those who do business with us. Memphis serves as a hub in numerous ways, making it a perfect fit for our growth.”

This natural expansion reflects more than just business growth; it highlights CanopyNation’s deep commitment to the Memphis community, client relationships, and care for their team, all rooted by their five core values: People First, Accountability, Can-do Will-Do Mindset, Transparency, and Teamwork. These values form the foundation for CanopyNation’s hard work and passion for delivering exceptional service.

People First

At the start of CanopyNation’s values is their strong belief that people truly come first. This value drives how they provide support and build lasting trust with their clients.

“People first” isn’t just a phrase or words displayed on a wall; it’s something we live by every day,” said Sheridan Hibbard.

Not only do their clients come first, but their team members are also prioritized, ensuring a positive environment where everyone can flourish.

“It’s equally important to extend the same love and care for our team,” Hibbard said.

By putting the people at the center of everything they do, CanopyNation creates a meaningful, uplifting, and trust-driven experience for both their clients and team.

Accountability

The second value they stand by is their dedication to accountability. At CanopyNation, it is a principle guided by honesty, ownership, and integrity.

“It’s quite simple,” says Hibbard. “Accountability is about holding yourself accountable to what you need to be accountable for, all while making the right decisions.”

This mindset builds deep trust both within the team and their clients. When everyone takes ownership of their commitments, it creates a smooth, easy-going atmosphere where communication and collaboration grow, leading to collective success. It also ensures clients can consistently depend on CanopyNation to follow through and deliver their promises.

Can-do, Will-Do Mindset

Next, CanopyNation focuses heavily on their can-do, will-do mindset. This approach is all about taking on challenges with an optimistic attitude and a drive to deliver excellent results. It is about staying resilient and solution-oriented, no matter what obstacles come their way.

As Hibbard described, “We need this mindset the most when we are approached with a challenge.”

Transparency

Maintaining transparency at CanopyNation is a key part of how they build trust with their clients. In the complex world of insurance, clear and open communication is crucial to help clients understand and feel informed in their decisions. CanopyNation concentrates on explaining every little detail to avoid client confusion.

Hibbard mentions that “The insurance industry has many rules and compliance standards that we strictly follow and prioritize.”

Teamwork

The final value CanopyNation follows is teamwork. Collaboration and support are at the heart of how their company performs. By working together, CanopyNation fosters a team where every member contributes their own strengths, creating a unique and diverse environment.

“I think teamwork was truly shown today. We have people from our offices in Mississippi and other areas that came together as a whole and celebrated this major success,” said Hibbard.

Final Thoughts

From putting people first and embracing accountability, to fostering a can-do attitude, exhibiting transparency, and working as a team, CanopyNation exemplifies what it means to be a community-focused and trustworthy organization. As CanopyNation continues to grow and serve more clients, their dedication to these five principles confirms they will remain a trusted partner for years to come.

THE GREATER PLATE: Just Enjoying the Moment at JEM Dining

July 14, 2025 by Taylor Ann Carpenter

You walk into a little restaurant tucked away in the Edge District. The lights are low, but the room is somehow still bright. The restaurant is buzzing but still manages to make you relax. You take a deep breath in and smile, thinking you may have just stumbled upon a hidden gem. Once you’re seated at a table, you glance around the room but are instantly captivated by the fact that you can watch the chef cooking in the kitchen. You hear laughter across the restaurant and notice a group of friends who appear to be celebrating. Adjacent to them is a couple experiencing a laid-back date, sharing stories over appetizers and drinks. That’s when you realize this is the place you can Just Enjoy the Moment. All that and more is found in the local restaurant, JEM Dining.

A LIFELONG DREAM

JEM Dining was started by Joshua Mutchnick and just recently celebrated its one-year anniversary in April of 2025. For Joshua, cooking was always a passion. Growing up in his hometown of Mobile, Alabama, he recalls the central theme of food in his family gatherings.

“I have really fond memories going to a family dinner and just having a great conversation around home-cooked meals,” he explained.

Joshua says he’s been cooking his “whole life,” but it wasn’t just with his family.

He notes, “Ever since I had a job, I’ve been cooking professionally.”

His cooking journey didn’t stay in Alabama. He went on to study at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York. Joshua was given the opportunity to intern in Philadelphia under Iron Chef, Masaharu Morimoto. After graduating, he spent time in Washington D.C. working under renowned chef, José Andrés. Then, he spent 10 years in Chicago working at Michelin-star restaurants.

“At first I really enjoyed great the artistry of cooking, but then the more I was able to do it professionally, I really loved the fast-paced environment, the adrenaline, and all the good and bad that comes with it.”

But after years of training and experience, Joshua decided it was time to fulfill his “lifelong dream.” He and his wife, Emily, decided to take the leap.

“The alternative is worse if I don’t try, even if it closes and fails… I need to do it.”

FINDING THE PERFECT PLACE

They began discussing places where they would want to live and open a restaurant. They ultimately landed on Memphis.

“We fell in love with Memphis because it has personality,” he said.

Memphis resonated with both Joshua and Emily. They recognized the culture, history, grit, and overall personality of the city that just drew them in.

“It is also real…if you try to be something you’re not, you’re not gonna get what you want.”

The two found a spot in the Edge District and decided that would be the place to open JEM Dining.

“We want to be an anchor in this neighborhood,” he explained.

JEM DINING

JEM Dining is not quite fine dining, but resembles it in some ways.

“I learned a lot of techniques from there, but I’m not trying to be that.”

Joshua recalls going to restaurants, even to this day, and not understanding something listed on the menu. He doesn’t enjoy the overly polished atmosphere of many fine dining restaurants.

“…regardless of what we do, I don’t want it to be intimidating.”

To reduce the intimidation, he has definitions of the fancy words and ingredients listed on his menu and his website. Joshua makes an effort to visit every table and get to know the people eating at his restaurant. He also has an open kitchen allowing customers to watch what’s going on behind the scenes.

“I worked at a lot of restaurants and my favorite…are the ones with open kitchens, he continued. “You get to see your food come out and you get excited about it, and then the chef comes out and talks to you, and it’s that much more of an experience because the food doesn’t magically appear right away.”

Joshua’s whole goal is for people to come in, relax, and just enjoy the moment.

“The biggest compliment could be people come in, tune out the outside world, turn off your phone… and just have a good conversation, create a memory in this space, around our food.”

THE FOOD

The menu at JEM Dining mixes the refined with the ordinary. For a starter, you can go with the classic of freshly baked yeast rolls or venture out to crunchy and flavorful vegan-friendly Kimchi Arancini that you won’t want to stop eating. For your main course, you could have the double cheeseburger or try something you won’t see at other places, like the Matzo Ball Stuffed Chicken.

Whatever you choose, you can’t go wrong. Joshua crafted his menu with care.

“Throughout my life, I realized, the best food I can create is the food that I want to eat,” he said.

Eating at JEM Dining is an opportunity to learn and try new things. Whether you are trying their Short Rib Adobo or Homemade Gnocchi, you’re sure to enjoy the moment. And don’t forget to top off the meal with one of their to-die-for desserts, like the chocolate cake served with an ice-cold glass of milk.

FINAL THOUGHTS

JEM Dining is located at 644 Madison Ave #102, Memphis, TN. They’re open Wednesday and Thursday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

They also host special events throughout the year, from wine tasting classes to their monthly Sunday Supper hosted on the last Sunday of the month. JEM Dining has happy hours that pair perfectly with their incredible cocktails and mocktails.

JEM Dining is a local mom-and-pop restaurant you won’t want to skip out on. They have a heart and soul that match the city they’re in.

JEM Dining gets 5 forks up for passion and personality.
