Chamber, AGAPE and Partners Outline Plans for Connecting Under-resourced Communities with Economic Opportunities

Representatives from the Greater Memphis Chamber, Agape Child & Family Services, Workforce Investment Network (WIN) and Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) spent time in Washington, DC, last week as part of the National Association of Workforce Boards 2019 Forum, a gathering of workforce professionals resenting 550 Workforce Development Boards and groups across the nation.

The purpose of the meeting was to engage with national and local leaders in business, government, labor and education on high-level discussions, insights and forward thinking that address the toughest workforce-related challenges and in developing the future of work.

The Memphis contingent hosted a workshop presentation titled A Two-Generation Paradigm: Education, Employment, and Economic Assets for Under-Resourced Communities, to share some of the innovative solutions being deployed in Memphis to help expand economic success to communities that have typically experienced disinvestment. The workshop included a panel discuss featuring David Jordan, President & CEO of Agape, Chamber President & CEO Beverly Robertson, Kyla Guyette, Executive Director of WIN and the Greater Memphis Workforce Development Board and MATA CEO Gary Rosenfeld. The panel was facilitated by Julie Sanon, COO of Agape.

According to the Aspen Institute, two-generation approaches focus on creating opportunities for and addressing needs of both children and the adults in their lives together. The approach recognizes that families come in all different shapes and sizes and that families define themselves.

The presentation included information about the Chamber’s upcoming Workforce Summit, which will bring together stakeholders for a two day meeting designed to establish a strong talent pipeline for the Greater Memphis Region and to help establish Memphis as a national model for how to address workforce challenges. The conference will include keynote speakers and breakout planning sessions.
