Expansion follows December announcement of supercomputer growth and tech partnership ecosystem

Memphis, TN – The Greater Memphis Chamber today announced that xAI has further solidified its commitment to Memphis by purchasing a one-million-square-foot property in Southwest Memphis, marking another significant milestone in the company’s expanding presence in the Digital Delta.

This latest investment builds upon xAI’s transformative December 2024 announcement (previous release) regarding the expansion of its “Colossus” supercomputer facility and the attraction of major tech partners.

“xAI’s acquisition of this property ensures we’ll remain at the forefront of AI innovation, right here in Memphis,” stated Brent Mayo from xAI. “We’re committed to expanding alongside this community and doing what’s best for the city. As we transform this property and enhance our facility, we’ll bring more employment opportunities and economic growth to the area.”

“This significant expansion by xAI reinforces Memphis’s position as a premier destination for technological innovation,” said Ted Townsend, President and CEO of the Greater Memphis Chamber. “Their investment in this million-square-foot facility, along with xAI’s collaborative partnership, demonstrates the tremendous momentum we’re building in the Digital Delta. Memphis continues to prove itself as the ideal location for companies leading the future of technology.”

The new facility will complement xAI’s existing operations and support the company’s growing presence in Memphis, with the Colossus supercomputer well on the path to the supercluster size mentioned at the Greater Memphis Chamber’s Annual Chairman’s luncheon in December.

The expansion also follows an $80 million state-of-the-art Colossus Water Recycling Plant, featuring the world’s largest ceramic bioreactor (MBR) wastewater recycling system. Located in Frank C. Pidgeon Industrial Park, this innovative facility will process up to 13 million gallons of wastewater daily, eliminating the need to draw from the Memphis Aquifer for industrial use. This sustainable solution is expected to protect approximately 4.745 billion gallons of the Memphis Aquifer annually – a 9% reduction in demand – while also serving other major industrial users in the region.

The facility also features the world’s largest Tesla Megapack deployment for supercompututing and data center operations, ensuring the facility never draws from the grid during demand response periods, prioritizing the energy needs of Memphis residents and surrounding communities.
