Chamber’s 2020 Mid-Year Chairman’s Forum to Focus on “After the Virus”

June 15, 2020 by Amy Daniels

On Tuesday, June 23,  join the Greater Memphis Chamber Chairman Willie Gregory for the Chamber’s first virtual Mid-Year Chairman’s Forum.  Chairman Gregory will give a brief update on the activity the Chamber has engaged in during the first half of the year.  Following Chamber updates, we will have Benjamin Pring, co-founder of Cognizant’s Center for the Future of Work, as the keynote speaker.

Ben will discuss “After the Virus.” His discussion will center around what is going to be changed?  What technologies we will use?  How we will go back to physical facilities to work? What about travel, security, health and safety?  Ben feels it is “unrealistic to think that we will go back to normal and we as leaders need to adjust.”  Ben has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times, the London Times, Forbes, Fortune, the MIT Review, the Daily Telegraph, Quartz, Inc., Axios, the Australian, and the Economic Times.

What is an Industry cluster and why is it important?

March 28, 2019 by Amy Daniels

Industry Cluster

The Memphis & Shelby County Economic Alliance is working together to roll out a new cluster-based strategy for economic development to help capitalize on our region’s strengths in specific industries. This handy primer provides an overview of industry clusters – both traded and local – and why they are important to a region’s economic prosperity.

What is an industry cluster?
Strong concentrations of related industries in one location are called industry clusters. Industry clusters consist of companies, suppliers, service providers, educational, research and specialized training institutions that support one another. Strong industry clusters in a particular region fuel the regional economy, generate payrolls that can sustain families and create strong innovation. Industry clusters also help position specific regions for uniquely competitive for jobs and private investment.

TIF Districts | Economic Development Terms Explained

June 4, 2018 by Amy Daniels

Economic Development Terms

As Memphis undergoes several economic development studies and the conversation grows around how to make our city a desirable place to do business, there are many industry terms and acronyms thrown around that make these concepts less accessible to the public. We believe everyone should have a seat at the table and be able to follow along with these issues – and ultimately be able to contribute to creating innovative solutions. To start, we’re talking about incentives – the tools we have to attract companies to Memphis. Every city and state has a different incentive package to offer potential companies. Since we are in a national competition for jobs and investment, incentives are essential for us to remain competitive. We’re also listening to new ideas about incentivizing companies to invest in Memphis.
